Our mission at Enlightened Privacy, PC (“EP”) is to educate and empower our clients. We do this by providing guidance and work product that is uniquely tailored to the individual client’s needs, values, and priorities. At the foundation of EP is a “client first” mindset. EP is a boutique solo privacy law practice that is ready to grow. We apply an “enlightened” mindset to our culture as well, leading with honesty, kindness, integrity, authenticity and wholeheartedness.

This is a unique opportunity to work with a young, small law practice that is looking to do things differently than a typical law firm. Our intention is to grow mindfully and with clear intention and purpose. To be able to provide the highest level of service and build inspiring future offerings for our clients, we need to evolve and expand.

We are seeking a smart, talented privacy attorney contractor to join our team. Our ideal candidate is someone who welcomes flexibility, is a self-starter and is able to manage their own projects with ease. The candidate welcomes new challenges and opportunities to learn and is a superstar at analyzing and applying new laws and legal requirements. They can distill complex legal requirements into concise guidance that is actionable and easy to understand, like magic. They resonate with and share EP’s values. They are thoughtful, kind, authentic and wholehearted.

This role is virtual, which means strong communication and expert collaboration skills are crucial. There is no required minimum number of billable hours. Given the nature of our work, we can’t predict a set number of hours per week on a consistent basis. We expect the role to start out part time, at around 10 to 15 hours per week. Over time, we expect the number of available work hours to increase.

Qualifications of a successful candidate:

• Minimum of 3 years experience at a law firm or in-house at a company (or both) in data protection and privacy

• Excellent writing skills (impeccable grammar and spelling skills, drafting is an area of strength)

• Strong working knowledge of and experience advising clients on data protection and privacy laws (GDPR and CCPA must have, other geos are a bonus)

• Understanding of privacy as applied to marketing and digital advertising a plus

• Experience with fintech companies, financial privacy, or crypto space a plus

• Meticulous attention to detail

• Experience assessing and balancing risk and advising on practical, business-oriented solutions to compliance needs

• Thinks logically and nimbly, seeing multiple different perspectives and approaches to a particular question

• Self-starter who is comfortable running with projects independently and knows when to ask questions and what questions to ask

• Able to take direction, is curious and excited to learn

• Collaborative and creative with a sense of humor and penchant for having fun

• Able to interact with clients directly and competently

• Kind and mindful

In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following activities:

• Research the latest data protection laws and draft clear, actionable summaries of the requirements

• Compare legal requirements across different jurisdictions globally to understand and advise on similarities and differences

• Analyze data protection and privacy laws and regulations on a granular level, grasp the nuances of legal requirements, and understand and explain the business implications

• Draft and help clients implement privacy notices (for customers, HR, and recruiting)

• Create compliance documentation for clients, such as records of processing activities and internal data protection policies and procedures

• Lead and coordinate client projects

• Assist EP with developing and collaborate on new projects, initiatives and offerings

• Engage directly with clients on calls and through email and written work product

• Provide practical guidance to clients on compliance with applicable laws, such as CCPA, other US state privacy laws, and GDPR

• Draft and negotiate DPAs and advise clients on how to implement and negotiate DPAs

• There’s no billable hour minimum. While we expect you to get your projects done in the agreed time, we don’t impose any sort of minimum billable hour requirement.

• By working with Jackie, you’ll be gaining coaching and guidance from an experienced privacy pro who has gained deep knowledge and wisdom in leadership and business development through her experience and completing multiple certificate programs.

• A small practice provides greater flexibility and creative opportunity to develop new offerings as well as work product that really matters to our clients.

Enlightened Privacy, PC is a woman-founded and woman-owned law practice that focuses in global data protection and privacy matters. We help our business clients in a variety of industries to build and manage data protection and privacy compliance programs, advising on European privacy requirements under the GDPR to emerging U.S. state compliance under the CCPA and other U.S. state laws to AI governance and beyond.
